Why Medical AI Is So Obsessed with AI Agents

Everyone’s talking about ChatGPT, but the topic garnering the most attention in medical AI research these days is AI Agents.

While generative AI has already become a familiar technology, “AI Agents” have recently been attracting the most attention in medical AI research. — AI Index Report 2026, Medicine Chapter 6.2

Can we entrust our medical care to ChatGPT?

Doctors don’t make a diagnosis based on a CT scan alone. They combine various pieces of information—such as imaging results, EMR entries, blood test results, and medical history—to reach a final conclusion.

That’s why medical AI agents were introduced

The AI Agent finds the necessary information, plans multiple steps, and utilizes tools to complete the task from start to finish. It’s not just an AI that stops at searching.

It’s not just an AI that does searches.

It can review everything from test results to the latest evidence and even suggest next steps. Just like a doctor’s comprehensive diagnostic process, the AI agent analyzes complex medical data to recommend the next course of action based on the latest evidence.

But… it’s not quite perfect yet.

To deploy medical AI agents in real-world hospitals, we need criteria to evaluate how well they “perform their tasks.” To this end, the research team developed MedAgentBench, a benchmark for validating the performance of medical AI agents.

Even the state-of-the-art medical AI agents currently have a success rate on MedAgentBench of only approximately 69.7%.

So why invest in AI agents, then?

The goal of AI agents is to save healthcare professionals time and support better decision-making. Even though they aren’t perfect yet, this technology is advancing the fastest in that direction.
