The idea did not appear out of nowhere. The starting point most often cited is a 2018 paper titled World Models.
The limits of learning by doing
Traditional AI learned by acting, observing the result, and trying again.
But doing that for real, every time, is slow, expensive, and sometimes dangerous.

People don’t have to try everything to know how it might go. They picture it.

A world model works the same way: the AI pictures how the world will change, then chooses better because of it.
